Fresh Start

Fresh Start is a supported housing project for priority & prolific offenders aged 18 - 65 years. At Fresh Start, they provide a secure place to stay for those who are attempting to re-establish themselves in a more regular and stable way of life provide an environment that promotes and encourages positive lifestyles provide support through individually tailored support plans, which aim to address issues that prevent successful independent living within the community.

Mary Dawe from Eatsome met with Sue Hedges and agreed to deliver 2 hour cooking sessions for 4 weeks at the house.  The course started on 4th August and Eatsome took along a Volunteer, Dennis to assist with the sessions and Freshstart provided a worker to attend the sessions with a view to continuing with the cooking after the four week course.

Of the six young men who attended the course, four attended all four sessions and the other two attended two of the four weeks.

The following dishes were made over the four week course which covered a number of cooking skills:

Country fresh soup, cheese scones, mixed bean chilli and rice, bread and butter pudding, tuna pasta bake, omelette, spicy fries, cous cous and sausage, salad, meatballs, oat biscuits, naan bread, cauliflower cheese gratin, birthday  cake, chicken korma, chickpea and vegetable curry, spaghetti bolognese, fruit crumble, corned beef stew, savoury rice, fish parcels, cabbage and courgette crumble and pork stir fry.

Cooking times – how do you know when things are ready
Eatwell Plate – what is a balanced diet?
5 A Day
Budgeting
Food storage tips

Some of the comments made during the sessions were: 
 “Thanks a lot, it was really interesting and I enjoyed it.  All very good and lovely food all round.  Looking forward to next week, I’ve never stayed this long at anything, not even probation keep me for this long”

At the end of the four week course, from the evaluation completed, Out of the six participants: Three rated the course as good and three as excellent. Four said that there diet had improved since the start of the sessions and two stayed the same.  They all thought that they would use the skills learnt in these sessions in their everyday lives.


One of the residence is putting forward a Bite Size Grant for Fresh Start to purchase equipment etc in order to keep the cooking sessions going.  He has also booked onto the  Eatsome Get Cooking Training with a view to running the sessions himself in the future and they have asked if Dennis could continue to volunteer with them to keep the sessions going until they are confident to go it alone.
